Dali Ancient City
Beautiful Bai Girls
Dali is situated near the foothills of the Himalayas, on the southern end of the legendary Silk Road in Yunnan Province. It was an ancient capital of Nanzhao(南沼)
which flourished in the area during the 8th and 9th centuries. Dali is famous for its marble production. The word "marble" in Chinese literally means "Dali Stone"(大理石)
Apart from Lijiang(麗江), Dali is now a major tourist destination. Dali is predominantly inhabited by Bai People(白族)the major ethnic group in Yunnan province. The Bais are closely related to the Thais(泰國人) of Thailand and the Dais(傣族), another ethnic minority in Yunnan Province.
The main attraction of Dali is probably the surrounding countryside. To the west lies the Cangshan Mountain Range(蒼山) with peaks well above 4,000 meters and a large number of Buddhist temples.
In 1999, we went to Dali and visited the following tourist attractions:
(1) Chong Sheng Temple(崇聖寺)
(2) Three Pagoda(崇聖三塔)
(3) Butterfly Spring(蝴蝶泉)
